About MU

Mary Sumner Founder of MU

In 1876 Mary Sumner founded the Mothers’ Union to give spiritual guidance and practical help to mothers and families. It quickly developed from a meeting for local mothers in her sitting room to a worldwide Christian organisation with more than 3.6 million members in 77 countries. Though our lives and experience of the Mothers’ Union may differ widely depending on where we are, we are united by our shared belief in the importance of family values. We all have something to offer and something to learn. We have strong personal links between members around the world and we unite in prayer, worship and fellowship

The MU has so much to offer:
  • Membership of a caring Christian family that stretches across the world.
  • Regular meetings with the other members of your branch mostly with a speaker and time to make new friends over a cup of tea.
  • Encourages members to be involved in church and community.
  • Hosts Quiet Days.
  • Encourages marriage preparation and support.
  • Runs parenting groups.
  • Supports literacy programmes in Africa.
  • The opportunity to become involved with projects which help families in our Diocese and also overseas projects.
  • Worship with and prayer support from other MU members.

There is an elected board of Trustees chaired by the Diocesan President. The Mothers’ Union has four Units led by elected members. These are:-

  • Action and Outreach
The brief of this Unit is far reaching, to include the work of M.U Worldwide, the needs of young families and the management of Projects within branches or in the Diocese.
We have three trained Parenting Facilitators who run courses in various locations around the Diocese
  • Faith and Policy
This Unit is concerned with the spiritual needs of the members and their families.
  • Finance and Central Services
This Unit takes care of all the financial and administrative affairs of the MU in the Diocese.
  • Marketing
This Unit aims to keep members and non-members aware of MU as an organisation and its activities. It is responsible for the distribution of Home and Family magazine, Focus and the sale of MU Enterprises.

We are a Christian organisation which promotes the well-being of families worldwide.

Our Mission
Christian Cross The Mothers' Union is a worldwide Anglican-led organisation whose purpose is to be specially concerned with all that strengthens and preserves marriage and Christian family life
Person praying The essential heartbeat of the Mothers' Union is its commitment to prayer. Members worldwide are united in a daily 24-hour Wave of Prayer.
Church Members bring a wide variety of practical help and support to the Church and the community.
Group of people MU offers the fellowship of a regular branch meeting or a diocesan link.
Christening Font Membership is open to all who have been baptised in the name of the Trinity and who support the Aims and objects of the Society.

How do we achieve this?

  • Developing prayer and spiritual growth in families.
  • Studying and reflecting on family life and marriage and their place in society.
  • Resourcing our members to take practical action to improve conditions for families, both nationally and in the communities in which they live.

Our Five Objects

  • to uphold Christ's teaching on the nature of marriage and to promote its wider understanding
  • to encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church
  • to maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians, united in prayer, worship and service
  • to promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children
  • to help those whose family life has met with adversity

Membership

Membership of the MU is open to women and men, married, separated, divorced or single who have been baptised in the name of the Trinity and who accept our aims and objects.
All members of the Mothers' Union share equal status, but there are different ways of belonging.

Branch Member
Joins through a branch and attends its meetings. She may be involved in Mothers' Union projects and activities at branch, diocesan or central level.

Diocesan Member
Joins through a diocese and is not attached to a branch. She may be involved in Mothers' Union projects and activities at branch, diocesan or central level.

IMPC Member
Those who are housebound, whether through disability, increasing frailty or responsibilities as a carer may become IMPC members. They are visited by fellow members from their branches or IMPC rep. and remembered in prayer. In turn they pray with us for the active work of the Mothers’ Union here and around the world. Each indoor member receives the Prayer Diary twice yearly, regular letters and greetings at Christmas, Easter and Birthdays.
