Commissioning Of All-Ireland Chaplain
Dean Raymond Ferguson was commissioned as All Ireland Chaplain of the Mothers’ Union in St. Fethlimidh’s Cathedral, Kilmore on Sunday 11th December 2011 by the Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Revd. Alan Harper.
The service was led by Dean Raymond and the lessons were read by Mrs. Joy Little, Diocesan President and Mrs. Ruth Mercer All Ireland President.
The choir which was conducted by Dean Raymond sang Psalm 126 and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere". The address was given by Right Revd. Ken Clarke, Bishop of Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh and the Central Chaplain of the Mothers' Union Worldwide. Bishop Ken welcomed everyone present and especially the Most Revd. Alan Harper, Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Revd Dr Michael Jackson, Archbishop of Dublin and Bishop of Glendalough and their wives, also All Ireland Mothers’ Union President Mrs. Ruth Mercer. Bishop Ken said that this was a historic occasion for Kilmore Cathedral to have the Archbishop of Armagh and the Archbishop of Dublin visiting at the same time.
Using our Gifts and Talents - In his address Bishop Ken discussed the gifts that every single member of the body of Christ has been given from God and asked how many did we have unused. Important gifts we can give to others are a Christ like example – an example to be followed, and Christ like words that encourage, love and heal. He reminded us that thoughtless and loveless words could break people. Quoting Proverbs 12 we are told that a gentle answer casts away wrath.
Using a story from Mary Ann Baird and other instances when words and example have a powerful effect on others, using our gifts can give others unforgettable experiences of goodness and inspiration for life.
Concluding his address Bishop Ken talked of the new Chaplain’s experience in ministry, family life, his enthusiasm for the work of the Mothers’ Union, the Christ like example and words he uses and thankedGod for his appointment.
After the service everyone was treated to a sumptuous tea in the parochial hall.

Trip to Conference in Cork
The venue for the weekend conference was The Celtic Ross, Hotel, Roscarberry. The keynote speaker was Mrs Mary Good, wife of Bishop Ken Good of Derry & Raphoe. The theme of the conference was 'Small change - big difference'. Really how a small change in each one of us can make a big difference in the world. We were really encouraged by Mary to delve down into our real selves - the person underneath that the world doesn't see. Mary shared her own experiences of coming from America to be a clergy wife, and then a Bishop's wife, in Ireland.
On Friday evening, we had a very energetic Beetle Drive. 'Energetic' because it involved a lot of moving about from table to table - a great way to meet lots of people.
On Saturday, we each attended two of the four workshops on offer. These were all very interesting and relevant. The whole weekend was a very happy time for us - catching up with all our friends from our Link Diocese. The hotel was lovely and the food was really excellent. Some of us even managed to get a chance to use the leisure centre. The entertainment on Saturday night was 'home produced' and really great fun.
The weekend concluded with a Conference Celebration Service in St Fathna's Cathedral in Roscarberry. The six ladies from KEA had a great time - roll on the next weekend away!!

Never
Alone Project
Suicide among teens is a sad and devsating
part of life in Ireland today. The incidence of suicide
has been rising steadily over the last number of years.
With this in mind the Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh Mothers'
Union decided to do something practical and ‘Never
Alone’ is a result of their efforts.
A short DVD was produced to inform, provoke
discussion, reach out to and encourage teens, teachers
and parents to engage with this sensitive subject - underpinned
by the message that we are 'Never Alone' in life. In conjunction
with the DVD small cards are available which can be taken
away. They contain some words of encouragement, useful
telephone numbers and website addresses.
This pilot project was launched in Cavan
Royal School in October 2009 and feedback has been very
positive. It was especially found to be useful as a prompt
to get teenagers to talk about the problems they face.
The project has now been launched in Sligo Grammar School
and it has also been offered to five other schools.
